FAQ
1. When we you be opening?
The goal is within the next 2 years, so by 2025! However, if we are able to obtain the funds, permits & licenses, and audience before then, we will open sooner.
2. Where will you be located?
We don't have an exact location yet, but it will be in the Kenosha, WI area.
3. Are you open to partnering with other businesses or nonprofits?
Yes! Absolutely! If there are businesses, nonprofits, or individuals interested in partnering with us for various collaborations or supportive professional relationships, we would love to talk! You can inquire about this through our contact page, via social media, or by emailing us at sweetpeabosscafe@gmail.com
4. How are you raising startup funds for Sweet Pea?
There are a few ways! First and foremost, we are crowdfunding via a campaign on Givebutter. People may donate to our campaign by going to https://givebutter.com/sweetpeafund or by texting SWEETPEABOSS to 53-555
Additionally, we have a merchandise shop where people can purchase brand wear while supporting us in starting the business. Plus, we do pop-up events which helps us raise funds as well!
5. When will you start accepting donations?
Donations for the startup fund for Sweet Pea may be made anytime, as that campaign is currently active.
For the philanthropy shop, we are always accepting monetary donations. As for item donations from our approved list of brands, those donations will not be accepted until we are closer to opening so we can be mindful of best by dates.
If we happen to be doing a pop-up event, we will announce that we are looking for donations so we may offer items to people during our pop-ups!
6. How do I donate to the philanthropy shop?
We accept both monetary and item donations for the shop. If you are going to donate items, there is a pre-approved list of brands we take, which can be found on our Shop N' Pop page.
For monetary donations, you can email us with a donation form (also found on our Shop N' Pop page) and we will provide additional steps on payment methods we accept.
For item donations, you will need to email us the same form, but then we will discuss drop off or pick up options for those items you wish to donate.
7. What is a Pop-Up Event and how do I host one?
A pop-up event is when we will show up to an event we are invited to and hand out donated supplies, sell brand merchandise, give people information about our brand, and accept in-person donations for our start-up fund. It's a way for us to show our faces to the community and build our brand further.
If you are interested in having us pop up at your event or shop, please reach out and let us know what you're looking to do! We are always happy to plan things into our schedule, and work with those in our community to provide what we can! You can reach out via social media or email at sweetpeabosscafe@gmail.com
Depending on the pop-up and how much notice we have, we may carry different items with us. If you want us to focus on something specific, please let us know during planning discussions!
8. How will you provide support to parents?
On top of everything listed on our services page, we will also connect parents in the community to resources such as WIC, SNAP, nonprofits who help parents in the area, and other programs that may lend some support to those who need it.
We also hope to be in contact with a lot of the child-friendly establishments in the city by the time we open our doors, so we will be able to recommend people to child-friendly activities and classes as well!
9. What is Parent Proud?
As a mom, I understand how stressful it is to fear being told everything you're doing wrong when parenting. I get the anxiety and frustration of just one more person voicing an opinion you did not ask for.
As a society, we have convinced people that not only is it acceptable, but it is somehow heroic to shame and belittle parents over parenting decisions they make for their children, and I think that is nuts! We should be supporting each other, not tearing each other down.
Every year more guidelines come out about safety & development for children, and sometimes they contradict previous teachings or maybe they don't make sense to you. Now, safety is our number one priority when it comes to what we do, but we also recognize that every child and every parent is different. We will never recommend going against medical advice or going out of your way to ignore safety guidelines, but if you make a choice as a parent due to following cues given to you by your child or make a call due to a specific situation then we will support you, not tear you down.
I strongly believe that is how it should be. We should be teaching parents to follow the cues their children give them and to trust their parent instincts. There is no reason we should be scaring parents into doing things that may or may not be best for their children. This is why I refer to Sweet Pea as Parent Proud; because we don't shame here, we echo that you should be proud!
10. How do your products relate to parenting?
Mainly, the fun names refer to different aspects of parenting.
However, our products also keep wellness in mind. Whether it's an aspect of comfort or literal physical health, we do our best to keep the spirit of parenting in mind when we craft menu items!
11. How did the concept of Sweet Pea start?
Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to be a mother. That was my dream job. However, I also know myself, and I know I would never be able to sit at home and not make a positive difference for my children. So I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how I was going to change the world for the better for my kids, when I had them.
Well, at first I wanted to be a criminal profiler and get bad guys off the streets. Then due to an incident that has left me unable to handle guns, it became an unrealistic career. So, I turned to what was originally intended to be a backup plan. I was going to open a café & bakery that was mystery themed - to keep the crime nerd in me happy - that focused on building the community up. I thought that was what would make a key difference for my kids.
Then, my daughter was born in 2023. Meeting her, becoming a mother, I had this realization that there are better ways I can make a difference. Experiencing the phenomenon that is people giving you advice 24/7 and getting upset if you don't take it, people telling you everything you are doing wrong and trying to persuade you to parent different, and the constant feeling of walking on egg shells around others rather than being able to 100% focus on your child(ren) was an eye opener. I remember thinking, "This is nuts! Why do people tolerate this?? And why is it seen as rude to not tolerate this??"
So, walking with my daughter on a sunny day here in Kenosha, Sweet Pea was born. I suddenly had this idea that maybe the best way I can make the world better for my kids was to start by making the world better for the parents who are trying to do the same thing as me: make this place safe for our kids and ensure our kids are happy.
12. Are you a nonprofit?
No. Sweet Pea will be a LLC, though our philanthropy shop is a non-profit taking part of the business. We believe there are nonprofits out there that need the government funding way more than we do, and we also want to encourage the village that is our community to be more involved in ensure a safe place for our incoming generations.
This is why our shop is donation based and run completely within the business rather than being registered separately as a nonprofit.
13. Will you be hiring? What will work-life be like?
Once I get closer to opening, I will be figuring out a staffing plan! Ideally, I would like to bring on a full staff within the first year, but that will depend on finances of course. In short though, yes I will be hiring eventually.
Working at Sweet Pea will be very balance-focused. If your a parent, your child is welcome in the workplace regardless of their age. You have a newborn and you're just off of leave? They are welcome, and we ill ensure you get all needed breaks to feed them, change them, and love them. They will also be safe and monitored while on the premises. You have a toddler? They can come play with the other kids and enjoy a snack with you on your paid lunch break. I am not choosing to do this just because childcare is expensive. I also know how it feels to be separated from your child when the bonding is still so crucial to their development. I do not think kids get in the way of work, I think they inspire it.
Other benefits I hope to include will be paid maternity & paternity leave (yes dads, I understand the importance of you being home with your little one too), free food & drink while working, discounted food & drink when not working for you and your immediate family, PTO as I can afford to give it, flexible scheduling, paid volunteer days, (hopefully) medical insurance, and paid sick & mental health days.
14. Can I volunteer?
Yes! We welcome volunteers at our pop-up events and, once we have our location, our philanthropy shop! Reach out to find out more!
